Of Gods and Men: The Daybreak Empire
A downloadable game for Windows and macOS
Out now!
Of Gods and Men: The Daybreak Empire is a turn-based strategy RPG in the pixel art retro style of classic tactical games from the 90s and early 00s. We’ve mixed unit-based tactical combat, overworld territory management, and a rich story-driven campaign in a unique fantasy world.
The story follows Saaga, the leader of a backwater kingdom of the edge of Tamira disillusioned with her place in a world of people governed by the whims of bored gods and greedy lords. But when a general from the mainland comes to her begging for help, a chain of events is set off leading her on a path of war and diplomacy to create the greatest empire the world has ever seen.
This is the first full game from Dead Genre Studios, a Vancouver based indie team founded in 2017.
Features
- Quick time event combat
- 3 base unit types with combat advantages and weaknesses
- 12 unique factions, with 12 unique units
- A campaign map with 55 unique maps
- Territory management, unit creation, and army movement on the campaign map
- A unique cast of heroes, villains, and everything in between
- A world rich in flavour and lore
- A unique soundtrack blending acoustic instruments with retro chiptunes
How To Play
This game is played on PC with the mouse and keyboard. UI elements, units, and territories can be interacted with using the left mouse button. The escape key is used to exit windows and undo unit moves in battle.
From the campaign map, you can select your territories to either command the armies on them or to upgrade and create various buildings used for producing gold and units. Upgrading financial buildings increases their gold yield, and upgrading military buildings increases the starting level of units produced with that building. Each faction has its own special building which, in addition to producing gold, can produce a unique special unit.
When you move your army into a territory you do not control, you either take control of it if it’s empty, or trigger a battle if an enemy army is present. From the battle map, you first place your units as you wish on the 8 spawn nodes available on either side of the map. Once you've passed this phase, players take turn commanding their units across the field of battle.
Unit classes follow a basic advantage system:
Archers beat infantry
Infantry beat cavalry
Cavalry beat archers
Various special units can surmount this system.

Cool game, I really like it! great work!
This game, this idea, is amazing! I get a really strong _Romancing Saga 2_ or _Lost Technology_ vibe, as well as _Fire Emblem_. I wish you the best of luck, and may we see the full game soon!
I enjoyed the play through! The simplicity is great and I am able to grasp the concept with ease. The entire game made me feel like playing a story-driven Total War game. Although, part of me wanted to skip a turn just so I can collect money to build my army.
That said, enemies leveling up easily while leaving yours behind is kind of a bummer, good thing I have a pair of hero units to compensate but I still ended up replacing my forces in several battles.
Looking forward to see more of the game! ^^
Just cleared the game!
A turn-based, territory-node strategy game is a really wonderful concept. We wish that it spent longer in the grand strategy phase, but what was there was delightful.
Our full thoughts are pretty critical, but this is clearly a project to be proud of. The art, writing, and scenario are enjoyable and inspired. There's lots of clearly good ideas here, and by the end there were an enormous variety of units and characters.
We're not sure if the members of Dead Genre Studios are still active, but this was an enjoyable playthrough.
Thank you very much!
Hey! I get a crash after the Khan dies in the prologue. Is there a known fix for this? I'm really excited to keep playing if there is, I love the mix of Fire Emblem style combat with a Koei-lite world map!
It has tons of potential. Gameplay seems good, AI works well. It needs better balancing though. The beginning should be more welcoming. The art is a bit confuse as well. The tilesets color kind blend with the UI. Maybe go for more contrast on that. Wish you all well :)
Very charming game ! good arts, myusic and gameplay, the progressive difficulty is nice. I only found 1 bug : units that are positioned all the way to the top of the map can't attack; as the UI appear outside of the screen. Honestly that's about it, if you liked fire emblem and Dawn of war this game is for you
Edit : I just finished the game, and now i crave for more. In the future, a freeplay mode or multiplayer (i know it's difficult) would be welcome
Hi! We chose your game for our weekly Community Feedback discussion last week. You can find lots of detailed feedback on your game in this thread on the itch forums.
Hi there! Thank you so much for the in depth feedback! It's a shame you caught is not long before an updated demo, and we'll have a release date for the full game pretty soon so I hope you check back in. We'll do our best to apply your constructive criticisms!
At least one person nominated your game (that's how it showed up in our queue), so you definitely got at least a watcher :). Thanks for letting us know about the update!
I just played the demo and I loved it! I can't wait until the full game!
Hope it will be fun to make.
Thanks for playing! It's been a blast to create so far and we're hoping everyone has just as much fun playing it. :)

This looks soooo cool.
Thanks! We've been working hard to capture a retro feel and aesthetic that the whole team loves (with some modern twists), and we're hoping everyone else loves it too.

Wow, this looks brilliant. Any plans to bring this to Steam?
Absolutely something we're planning as part of our release. We'll know more solid details a little later this year. Thanks so much for your interest!

Really enjoyed the game! I love tactical rpg's like fire meblem and this one gives me so much nostalgia for the old gba versions! I don't have a lot of negatives for the game, I just think at some point you should tell the player what button to hit for the hit meter and how it works, because it feels very inconsistant right now. Like during my play through, some characters had the meter loop back while others did not. Also I hope to eventually see more classes, because at the moment I kinda take issue with one of them, like infantry beats cavalry? That kinda goes against the point of cavalry. But that's not a real big issue. I still loved the game and the style of everything! Can't wait to play the full game! I hope you enjoy the video!
Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it! I was also a huge fan of the GBA era FE games which of course was a big influence. The flavor of infantry beating cavalry is that they are utilizing spear which were historically the bane of cavalry. - Jamie
Can be a pretty hard turn based strategy game but, I think once you get the hang of attacking it might go smoother.
Thanks for playing! We'll be balancing the game's difficulty as we go forward. It's very rough right now. - Jamie
